This Week in ACC Volleyball

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) - Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball kicks off league play this week, beginning with a midweek ranked matchup between No. 5 Pitt and No. 11 SMU.
 
The ACC finished non-conference play with an overall record of 129-55 (.701), headlined by 10 wins against AVCA Top 25 teams and the inaugural ESPN Events “Showdown at the Net” title, after winning nine of the 16 matches against the SEC.
 
The ACC will feature two ranked Top 25 matchups this week as No. 5 Pitt travels to Dallas, Texas, to take on No. 11 SMU on Wednesday, September 24, at 8 p.m. ET on ACC Network. The Mustangs will then travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to take on the Panthers on Sunday, September 28, at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN. ACC Network will also feature California at Virginia at 1:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.
 
In the most recent AVCA/Taraflex Poll, Stanford led the ACC in the No. 3 spot with Pitt (No. 5), Louisville (No. 6), SMU (No. 11), Miami (No. 24) and North Carolina (No. 25) filling out the rest of the Top 25.
 
Noting ACC Volleyball
  • Miami’s Flormarie Heredia Colon was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week while Clemson’s McKenna Gildon earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors. SMU’s Averi Carlson and Clemson’s Katherine Sandt shared ACC Setter of the Week honors while Stanford’s Erika Sayer was named ACC Freshman of the Week.
  • Clemson is one of just eight teams nationally, and the only team in the league at the end of non-conference play, to remain undefeated with a 12-0 record.
  • Miami’s Flormarie Heredia Colon leads the nation in points per set with 6.21.
  • The ACC won the inaugural “Showdown at the Net,” hosted by ESPN Events, after winning nine of the 16 matches against the SEC. ACC teams won four out of five ranked matchups, headlined by No. 7 Pitt’s upset sweep over No. 3 Kentucky in the Shriners Children’s Showdown at the Net on September 10.
  • Pitt head coach Dan Fisher reached his 400th career win on September 10, in the Panthers’ win over No. 3 Kentucky. 
  • SMU’s Malaya Jones was named the AVCA Division I National Player of the Week on Tuesday, September 2.
  • Pitt was voted the preseason favorite to win the 2025 ACC Volleyball Championship for the second straight year by the league’s volleyball head coaches.
  • Seven ACC standouts were named to the AVCA Division I Player of the Year Watch List. The list included Chloe Chicoine (Louisville), Cara Cresse (Louisville), Flormarie Heredia Colon (Miami), Olivia Babcock (Pitt), Bre Kelley (Pitt), Malaya Jones (SMU) and Elia Rubin (Stanford).
  • Florida State’s Chris Poole ranks first among active NCAA Division I coaches with 945 victories in 39 seasons. Duke’s Jolene Nagel ranks fifth on that list with 715 career wins.
  • Louisville’s Dan Meske, NC State’s Megan Wargo-Kearney and Wake Forest’s Jeff Hulsmeyer are all in their first year as head coach of their programs.
