This Week in ACC Field Hockey

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – After a strong opening weekend of the field hockey season, all nine Atlantic Coast Conference teams are back in action this weekend on Friday, September 4, and Sunday, September 6. California, Duke, Louisville, Stanford, Syracuse and Virginia all remain undefeated after one week of action.
                                                     
The ACC’s west coast teams combined to go 5-0 over the first weekend of play with Stanford boasting a 3-0 mark, while Cal sits at 2-0. Duke, Louisville and Syracuse each got off to a 2-0 start to the season, highlighted by Louisville’s shootout win over No. 10 Miami (Ohio).
 
Louisville senior goalkeeper Emily Young was named the NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week after making 22 saves throughout the Cardinals’ first two games. Young allowed just two goals over the first week of play, leading Louisville to a pair of overtime victories.
 
The ACC/Big Ten Challenge continues this weekend at Boston College and Rutgers. The Eagles will welcome No. 6 Duke, No. 1 Northwestern and Ohio State to Newton, Massachusetts, while Rutgers will host Ohio State, No. 12 Syracuse and No. 5 Virginia. Last weekend, North Carolina and Wake Forest squared off with Iowa and Michigan in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Noting ACC Field Hockey
  • The ACC’s six ranked teams in the NFHCA Coaches Poll are the most of any conference.
  • The ACC has four teams in the top-10 nationally, including No. 5 Virginia, No. 6 Duke, No. 7 Wake Forest and No. 10 North Carolina.
  • The ACC holds a 14-4 record in non-conference play this season - the best of any conference.
  • ACC teams will play seven games against ranked non-conference opponents this weekend, highlighted by No. 6 Duke and Boston College battling No. 1 Northwestern.
  • Boston College, No. 6 Duke, No. 12 Syracuse and No. 5 Virginia will continue this season’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Syracuse and Virginia will head to Piscataway, New Jersey, to face No. 20 Rutgers and Ohio State, while Boston College will host Duke, No. 13 Maryland and No. 1 Northwestern.
  • For the second consecutive season, North Carolina was picked to win the ACC in a vote of the league’s nine head coaches. The Tar Heels garnered four first-place votes and were followed by Virginia, Duke and Wake Forest, all of which received at least one first-place vote.
  • Louisville senior goalkeeper Emily Young was named the NFHCA Division I National Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday, September 2, following a stellar opening weekend. Young made 22 saves to help Louisville to a 2-0 start, including a win over No. 10 Miami (Ohio).
