ACC Baseball in the 2017 MLB Draft: McKay Goes 4th to Lead Conference Picks

Eleven ACC Baseball Players Drafted on First Day of MLB Draft

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Eleven Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes were selected on the first day of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, tied for the most from any conference.

Louisville 1B/LHP Brendan McKay (4th pick overall, Tampa Bay Rays), Virginia 1B Pavin Smith (7th, Arizona Diamondbacks), Virginia OF Adam Haseley (8th, Philadelphia Phillies), North Carolina RHP J.B. Bukauskas (15th, Houston Astros), and North Carolina SS Logan Warmoth (22nd, Toronto Blue Jays) all heard their names called in the first round on Monday night.

North Carolina OF Brian Miller (36th, Miami Marlins) was selected in the Competitive Balance A round, and was followed by Wake Forest OF Stuart Fairchild (38th, Cincinnati Reds), Louisville 3B Drew Ellis (44th, Arizona Diamondbacks), Wake Forest 1B Gavin Sheets (49th, Chicago White Sox), NC State 3B Joe Dunand (51st, Miami Marlins), and Virginia RHP Tommy Doyle (70th, Colorado Rockies) to complete the first day of the 2017 draft.

With five first round picks, it extends a streak with at least one ACC player selected in the first round to 26 straight years.

For Louisville, McKay stands as the highest draft pick in school history. Virginia’s Smith and Haseley are the first set of position players from the same college to be selected in the top 10 of an MLB Draft since Oklahoma State’s Monty Fariss and Robin Ventura in 1988. North Carolina’s Bukauskas, Warmoth, and Miller were selected in the first round and first compensation round, giving the Tar Heels 22 such picks in program history and 10 since 2006.

The 2017 MLB Draft continues on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with rounds three through 10.
