GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Top-ranked Wake Forest boasts three season award winners and heads up the 2018 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Team as voted upon by the league’s head coaches and announced on Wednesday.
Demon Deacon sophomore Omir Fernandez was voted the ACC Offensive Player of Year, while junior Bruno Lapa was voted the ACC Midfielder of the Year. Wake Forest’s Bobby Muuss was recognized as the ACC Coach of the Year for a league-record fourth consecutive season.
North Carolina senior Alex Comsia earned the nod as ACC Defensive Player of the Year, while Duke midfielder Issa Rayyan earned ACC Freshman of the Year accolades.
Fernandez ranks third among ACC scorers with 28 total points, and his 11 goals scored are tied for second in the conference. The Bronx, New York, standout has delivered four game-winning goals, and he ranks among the ACC’s top five players in total shots (45), assists (0.33 per game) and per game scoring (1.56).
Lapa leads the ACC in assists with nine in 17 games (0.53) and also leads the conference in scoring with 1.71 points per game. The Curitiba, Brazil, native has delivered four game-winning goals for the Deacons and is a major reason Wake Forest ranks second nationally in team scoring with 2.72 goals per game.
Under Muuss, the Demon Deacons won the ACC Atlantic Division and earned a berth in the ACC semifinals for the fourth consecutive year. Currently ranked No. 1 in the country, Wake Forest owns a 17-1 overall record and tied for the most single-season conference wins in league history with a 7-1 regular-season ACC mark.
North Carolina’s Comsia has helped the Tar Heels lead the nation in goals against average (.361) while posting 10 shutouts. The North Vancouver, British Columbia, senior has started all 16 of the Tar Heels’ matches this season and is tied for third on the team with 1,474 total minutes played.
Duke’s Rayyan is tied for 10th among ACC players in shots per game (2.18). The freshman from Grand Blanc, Michigan, played a huge role in a 2-0 win at Virginia Tech on Oct. 26, scoring both goals in the victory that clinched a first-round bye for the Blue Devils in the ACC Championship. His 11 total points this season rank second on Duke’s team.
Fourth-ranked North Carolina leads all schools with six selections to the 2018 All-ACC Men’s Soccer Teams, including four first-teamers. Duke placed five total players on the first, second and third teams, while Wake Forest and Notre Dame had four total selections each.
The 2018 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship continues Wednesday evening, with a pair of semifinal matches. No. 1 seed Wake Forest will play host No. 4 Louisivlle, and No. 2 North Carolina will welcome No. 3 Duke. Both matches are set to start at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra. The winners will advance to Sunday’s championship game at Sahlen’s Stadium at Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina (noon, ESPNU).
