Virginia Falls to Georgetown in PKs in NCAA College Cup Final

CARY, N.C. (TheACC.com) – Virginia fell to Georgetown 7-6 in a penalty kick shootout Sunday evening in the championship game of the 2019 NCAA Men’s College Cup at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. Following an incredible back-and-forth affair and 110 minutes of action, the teams finished in a 3-3 draw before going through seven rounds of penalties to determine the national champion.

The top-seeded Cavaliers finish their season with a 21-2-1 record, while third-seeded Georgetown won its first national championship and ended the season with a 20-1-3 record.

While the game featured the top two defenses in Division I men's soccer, it quickly turned into an offensive battle, producing the highest-scoring national championship game since 1980.

Virginia scored in the 10th minute when Joe Bell ripped a shot that took a deflection and nestled into the net, just inside the right post.

Georgetown equalized in the 16th minute when Paul Rothrock poked home a loose ball deep in the box, and the Hoyas quickly forged ahead five minutes later following a free kick when Daniel Wu slipped a shot past Shutler from inside the 6-yard box.

Virginia knotted the score in the 58th minute when Daniel Steedman sent a low shot from the right side of the box and put it just inside the far post. Georgetown countered in the 81st minute on a goal from Derek Dodson, but the Cavaliers again rallied in the 86th minute following a wild scramble in the box when Daryl Dike roofed a loose ball just in front of the goal line for his third goal of the College Cup.

After two scoreless overtime periods, the teams went to a penalty-kick shootout, where the Hoyas went a perfect 7-for-7 before goalkeeper Tomas Romero stopped the Cavaliers’ seventh shot to clinch the title.

Dike was named the College Cup's Offensive Most Valuable Player and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Joe Bell, Henry Kessler, Colin Shutler and Daniel Steedman as well as Wake Forest's Bruno Lapa.
