Deacons win third ACC title in four years
CARY, N.C. (theACC.com) – Wake Forest won the 2019 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Virginia on Sunday afternoon.
The ACC title is the third for the Demon Deacons (29-3), after they claimed two of the last three.
The Cavaliers (21-4), seeded No. 2 in the ACC Championship, won the doubles point to start the match. Wake Forest’s No. 41-ranked duo of Bar Botzer and Petros Chrysochos earned a 6-3 win over Matthew Lord and Carl Söderlund at No. 2 doubles. Gianni Ross and William Woodall of Virginia defeated Siddhant Banthia and Melios Efstathiou on court three, 7-6 (7-3).
The No. 1 doubles match also went to a tiebreak, and Virginia's No. 37-ranked pair of Brandon Nakashima and Henrik Wiersholm was victorious over the No. 64-ranked doubles team of Alan Gadjiev and Borna Gojo, 7-6 (7-5).
Aswin Lizen picked up the first singles point, extending the Cavaliers’ lead to 2-0 after defeating Banthia, 6-4, 6-0 on court six. Efstathiou, ranked No. 95 nationally in singles, won the match at the No. 5 position over Ryan Goetz, 6-3, 6-1, cutting the Virginia lead to 2-1 overall.
Wake Forest picked up a second singles point to tie the overall score at 2-2 after No. 14-ranked and ACC Tournament MVP Borna Gojo defeated No. 5-ranked Söderlund on court one, 6-4, 6-2. Rrezart Cungu gave the Deacons a 3-2 lead after he took down Ross at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
No. 34-ranked Botzer clinched the title for Wake Forest with a 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) win on court three over Wiersholm.
As the ACC Champion, Wake Forest earned the league's NCAA bid. The NCAA Selection show is scheduled for Monday, April 29 at 6 p.m.
