Notre Dame, Duke Post Road Wins to Earn ACC Championship Game Berths

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke and Notre Dame posted road upsets Wednesday evening in the semifinals of the 2021 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship and clinched their spots in the ACC Championship Game on Sunday.

The fifth-seeded Fighting Irish scored two goals in 14 seconds to win, 2-0, at No. 1 seed Pitt, and No. 3 seed Duke followed with a 1-0 win at No. 2 seed Clemson. They became the first road teams to win in the 2021 tournament; home teams were 7-0-1 heading into the semifinals.

The championship match will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. ESPNU has the broadcast.

No. 5 Notre Dame 2, No. 1 Pitt 0
Notre Dame (11-5-3) advanced to the championship game for the first time since 2015 and is in search of its first ACC Championship. The Fighting Irish stunned Pitt (11-5-1) at Ambrose Urbanic Field, snapping the Panthers’ 19-match home win streak which dated to 2019. The Panthers entered with the ACC’s longest active home win streak and the second longest home unbeaten streak in the country.

The teams battled to a stalemate until the 77th minute when Jack Lynn struck for his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Lynn then assisted moments later on Daniel Russo’s goal for a 2-0 lead.

Pitt out-shot Notre Dame, 17-10, although the Irish put four shots on goal to just three for the Panthers. The Fighting Irish have yet to concede a goal through three matches in the tournament.

No. 3 Duke 1, No. 2 Clemson 0
Duke (13-3-1) scored the second upset of the day in the nightcap, while earning its first championship game berth since capturing the ACC Championship in 2006. The Blue Devils have won five ACC championships in program history.

ACC Offensive Player of the Year Thorleifur Ulfarsson scored the game’s lone goal on a penalty kick in the 28th minute, and the Blue Devils withstood an onslaught of Clemson pressure the rest of the match.

Clemson (13-5-0) out-shot Duke, 27-4. Duke goalkeeper Eliot Hamill made six saves in recording the clean sheet.
