UNC’s Ortega, BC’s North, Syracuse’s Goldstock Claim ACC Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina senior attacker Jamie Ortega and Boston College senior attacker Charlotte North were named the ACC Women’s Lacrosse Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while Syracuse graduate goalie Asa Goldstock earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Ortega broke the UNC career goals record on Sunday in a win over Vanderbilt when she scored her 199th career goal, breaking the previous record set by Abbey Friend from 2011-14. A native of Centereach, New York, she posted eight goals and four assists in two Tar Heel wins last week, helping top-ranked UNC improve to 5-0 this season. In Sunday's 17-6 win over No. 25 Vanderbilt, Ortega finished with four goals and three assists for a game-high seven points, two days after tallying four goals and one assist in Friday's 13-6 win over No. 11 Duke in the Tar Heels’ conference opener.

North scored 12 goals and tallied two assists for 14 points in two victories last week. The native of Dallas, Texas, scored eight goals against Albany, tying her career high, in a 22-12 win. She then recorded four goals against No. 15 USC in a 14-8 triumph. North also racked up eight draw controls and two ground balls and played a part in the No. 4 play on the SportsCenter Top-10 Tuesday night.

A native of Niskayuna, New York, Goldstock made 11 saves and helped Syracuse defeat a top-five opponent for the second week in a row, as the No. 2 Orange took down No. 5 Stony Brook on Saturday, 16-6. Four of her saves came on Stony Brook free-position attempts. Goldstock and the Orange defense held the Seawolves without a goal for the first 15:20 of the second half. Syracuse also held US Lacrosse Magazine preseason player of the year Ally Kennedy to no goals or assists.

All eight ACC women’s lacrosse teams are ranked again this week in the IWLCA poll: North Carolina (1), Syracuse (2), Notre Dame (4), Virginia (8), Duke (10), Boston College (11), Virginia Tech (13) and Louisville (25).
