ACC Women’s Lacrosse Opens NCAA Tournament Play This Weekend

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Six Atlantic Coast Conference teams will compete in the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship beginning this weekend. ACC teams comprise over 20 percent of the 29-team field, as the ACC leads all leagues with six teams in the tournament, including five of the eight seeds.

The first round will be held Friday, with four ACC teams in action, while the second round will be contested Sunday. Top-seeded North Carolina and No. 3 seed Syracuse earned first-round byes.

The quarterfinals are set for Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24. The winners of the four quarterfinal games will advance to the national semifinals on Friday, May 28, at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Maryland. The championship game will be played on Sunday, May 30 at noon.

Noting ACC Women's Lacrosse
• Six ACC teams earned berths in the 2020 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship, including national seeds North Carolina (1), Syracuse (3), Boston College (4), Notre Dame (5) and Duke (7). Virginia also received an at-large bid.
• The ACC owns 15 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse titles. North Carolina was the last ACC team to win the NCAA Championship in 2016.
• The ACC has had a team in the national title game 10 times in the last 11 seasons.
• North Carolina won its fifth straight ACC Championship following wins over Louisville, Notre Dame and Syracuse. The title was the sixth overall for the Tar Heels.
• The ACC has been represented by at least one team in the national semifinals in each of the last 30 years and 34 times overall.

• UNC is one of the four remaining unbeaten teams in Division I and leads the nation in wins with 18.
• The ACC leads all conferences with 11 of the 25 nominees for the 2021 Tewaaraton Award, including at least one from six of the eight ACC programs. UNC tops all schools nationally with four players on the list.
• In Inside Lacrosse's Midseason All-America honors, ACC players took nine of the 13 First-Team spots. In all, 30 ACC players earned Midseason All-America status - most of any league.
• ACC teams dominated in non-conference action, going 35-3 and more than doubling up their opponents on the scoreboard, 598-251.
• ACC teams have three of the nation's top scoring offenses: BC (7th, 16.5 gpg), UNC (11th, 16.1) and Syracuse (20th, 14.7).
• The ACC also has four of the nation's top 15 point scorers this year: UNC's Jamie Ortega (2nd, 97) and Katie Hoeg (4th, 93), Syracuse's Meaghan Tyrrell (6th, 86) and BC's Charlotte North (11th, 81).
• UNC ranks first nationally in scoring defense (5.9 gpg) and scoring margin (+10.2). 
• UNC senior Katie Hoeg owns an ACC-record 223 career assists, including 61 this season (first nationally in 2021). She is fourth in the ACC history and among active Division I players in career points (354). 
• UNC senior Jamie Ortega boasts 339 points (fifth in ACC history). She has scored 256 career goals, which is fourth in ACC history and third among active NCAA players. 
• BC senior Charlotte North owns 235 career goals, which is fourth most nationally among active players and fifth in ACC history.
