Five ACC Teams Advance to NCAA Championship Quarterfinals
- Five Atlantic Coast Conference women’s soccer teams were selected to compete in the 2020 NCAA Championship and each team has advanced to the quarterfinals.
- The ACC’s five teams in the Elite 8 are the most of any conference and no other conference has more than one representative. The five ACC teams are the second most in the history of the league behind an NCAA record six teams in the quarterfinals in 2013.
- The ACC has at least one team in each quarterfinal matchup, as the league will look to make history with an all ACC College Cup. No conference has ever been responsible for all four teams in the College Cup.
- Top-seeded Florida State will battle conference foe and ninth-seeded Duke at 1 p.m., while No. 2 North Carolina and Texas A&M will kick off at the same time.
- Clemson meets No. 11 Santa Clara and Virginia plays TCU to wrap up the day’s slate with both matches set to begin at 5 p.m.
- ACC teams have compiled a 9-0-2 record in the tournament and have combined to outscore opponents 22-5 with six shutouts.
- With Duke and Florida State meeting in the quarterfinals, the ACC is guaranteed a team in the Women’s College Cup for the 38th time in the past 39 NCAA Tournaments and in each of the past 15 years.
- Each match will be held in Cary, North Carolina, at the WakeMed Soccer Park.
Five ACC Teams Selected to Compete in NCAA Championship
- Headlined by the tournament’s top two seeds, five Atlantic Coast Conference women’s soccer teams were selected to compete in the 2020 NCAA Championships.
- The ACC’s five teams are tied for the most of any league.
- The Seminoles are making their 21st overall and consecutive NCAA appearance, winning the 2014 and 2018 national championships.
- North Carolina continued its impressive streak of NCAA Championship selections, as the Tar Heels are the only team that has appeared in all 39 NCAA Tournaments.
- Duke is making its 26th appearance and sixth consecutive, while Clemson is making their seventh consecutive and 21st overall appearance in the field.
- Virginia has been selected to compete in 33 of the 39 NCAA Championships, the second most of any program behind North Carolina.
ACC & the NCAA Championship
- The ACC has 51 appearances in the College Cup - the most of any conference (the next closest conference is the Pac-12 with 27 appearances). Current membership combines for 63 appearances.
- Current ACC membership combines for 26 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championships. North Carolina owns 21 NCAA titles and Florida State owns two, while Notre Dame won three prior to joining the league in 2013.
- Eight different ACC institutions have represented the league at the College Cup (Boston College, Duke, Florida State, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest) since 1982.
- The ACC tournament champion has gone on to win the NCAA Women’s College Cup 16 times, most recently Florida State in 2018.
Three from ACC Named Mac Hermann Trophy Semifinalists
- Florida State’s Malia Berkely and Jaelin Howell, and North Carolina’s Brianna Pinto were recently named semifinalists for the Mac Hermann Trophy.
- The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer and has been awarded annually since 1967.
- Three men and three women finalists will be named for the award on Wednesday, May 12. The 2020-21 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on May 27, 2021 to formally announce this year’s winners.
Florida State Wins 2020 ACC Championship
- Highlighted by a pair of goals in the first six minutes of the match, top-seeded Florida State earned a 3-2 victory against second-seeded North Carolina on Sunday, Nov. 15, to claim the 2020 ACC women’s soccer championship.
- With the win, the Seminoles earned their seventh ACC Tournament title and second in the last three years.
- The Tar Heels and Seminoles we ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, throughout the duration of the season in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
Florida State, North Carolina Share ACC Regular-Season Title
- Florida State and North Carolina both finished the year unbeaten in conference matches and were tabbed ACC regular-season co-champions.
- The Seminoles won the tiebreaker with the Tar Heels to earn the No. 1 seed, which was decided by goal differential in conference games (21-16).
- It was FSU's fourth regular-season title and the 24th for UNC.
- The teams also shared the regular-season crown in 2014 when both were 9-0-1 in ACC action.
Five ACC Teams Ranked in United Soccer Coaches Poll
- Five ACC teams are ranked among the top 10 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Poll - the most of any conference.
- The ACC has had the nation's top-two teams in all eight polls this spring.
- Florida State has been No. 1 throughout the spring, followed No. 2 North Carolina.
- In the most recent poll, Clemson is No. 6, Duke is No. 8 and Virginia is No. 13.
ACC in the National Rankings
- ACC teams and ACC student-athletes currently lead the nation in numerous categories.
- Florida State is sixth nationally in points per game (8.38) and North Carolina is eighth with 7.39.
- The Seminoles are third in the country in scoring offense (3.08) and the Tar Heels are eighth (2.61).
- Florida State, Virginia and North Carolina are all among the nation's top 20 in shots per game. The Seminoles are second with 18.54, followed by Virginia (7th, 17.58) and North Carolina (20th, 16.28).
- Defensively, the Tar Heels lead the nation with a .778 shutout percentage and the Seminoles are seventh at .692.
- North Carolina paces the nation in total goals with 47, while Florida State is sixth with 40 and Virginia is 11th with 39.
- Claudia Dickey of North Carolina leads the nation with 14 shutouts.
- North Carolina's Brianna Pinto and Pitt's Amanda West are tied for fourth in goals with 13, while Virginia Tech's Emily Gray owns eight assists to rank 12th.
- Syracuse's Lysianne Proulx is third in the country with 9.12 saves per game.
Winningest Active Head Coaches
- Four ACC head coaches are among the top 10 in NCAA Division I for most victories by an active head coach.
- Longtime UNC skipper Anson Dorrance leads the way by a landslide with 888 wins, while Florida State's Mark Krikorian is fifth on the list with 457.
- Virginia's Steve Swanson is sixth with 432, while Pitt's Randy Waldrum is eighth with 420 career victories.
- The ACC's four coaches among the top 10 are the most of any conference.
Shutouts Headline Action in ACC Play
- Thirty-six of the 52 league matches played were won with a shutout and another was a scoreless draw.
- On two occasions during the season, all six league games held that day were won in shutout fashion.
- North Carolina allowed just three goals in ACC play during the fall, the fewest of any team in the conference.
Even Split
- The home teams won 27 of the 52 league games held in the fall, which excludes two ties.
- In contrast, road teams recorded 23 wins.
Eleven ACC Teams Earn United Soccer Coaches Academic Award
- Eleven ACC teams recently received the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster during the 2019-20 academic year.
- Duke and Syracuse led the way for the conference, each with team GPAs of 3.71, tied for the third best among Power 5 leagues.
- Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, NC State, North Carolina, Pitt, Virginia and Virginia Tech also earned the team honor.
- Seven of the 10 teams recorded a team GPA of 3.5 or better.
