DURHAM, N.C. (theACC.com) – The semifinal field for the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Championship is set following quarterfinal wins by Syracuse, Wake Forest and Virginia on Tuesday.
Semifinal action begins Wednesday at 1 p.m. with top-seeded North Carolina (15-0), which received an opening-rounded bye, facing No. 5 Syracuse (15-4) on Williams Field at Duke’s Jack Katz Stadium.
The second match is set for 3:30 p.m., with No. 2 seed Wake Forest (15-4) facing No. 3 Virginia (12-6). Wednesday’s winners will advance to meet in Friday’s 2 p.m. championship game.
North Carolina defeated Syracuse 6-1 in their regular-season meeting at Chapel Hill on Oct. 14 as freshman Ryleigh Heck recorded her first career hat trick and scored seven points. On that same date, Wake Forest scrapped for a hard-fought road win at Virginia. Abby Carpenter’s goal with 5:03 left in that match proved the difference.
Syracuse outscored No. 4 seed Boston College 6-2 in Tuesday’s tournament opener, and Wake Forest blanked seventh-seeded host Duke 1-0. Virginia and No. 6 seed Louisville waged another defensive battle in the nightcap, with the Cavaliers making a first-quarter goal hold up for a 1-0 win.

A glance at Tuesday’s quarterfinal action:
#5 Syracuse 6, #4 Boston College 2
Quirine Comans tallied her 15th and 16th goals of the season, and the nationally 10th-ranked Orange matched their season scoring high in Tuesday’s win.
The six-goal game was Syracuse’s fourth of the season and first since a 6-0 shutout of Dartmouth on Sept. 25. It marked the Orange’s eighth game of the year with at least five goals.
After spotting the Eagles an early 1-0 lead on a rebound follow shot by Autumn Littlefield, Syracuse battled back for a 3-2 lead at the end of an active first half that saw the teams combined for 24 shots (13 on goal).
Comans, Charlotte de Vries and Eefke van den Nieuwenhof each scored first-half goals for the Orange, with van den Nieuwenhof’s score off an assist from deVries at the 3:03 mark of the second quarter giving Syracuse the 3-2 lead it never relinquished. The Orange put the match away with three unanswered goals in the second half.
Milagros Arteta scored the Eagles’ second goal midway through the second quarter.
The win gave the Orange a 2022 sweep versus BC following a 3-0 win in the regular-season meeting on Sept. 30. Syracuse is 3-0 all-time versus the Eagles in the ACC Field Hockey Championship.
The teams combined for 39 shots, and Syracuse keeper Brooke Borzymowski registered nine saves.
The nationally 16th-ranked Eagles slipped to 8-10 with Tuesday’s loss.
#2 Wake Forest 1, #7 Duke 0
One goal proved enough for the nationally eighth-ranked Demon Deacons, who won for the 15th time in 17 games and earned their first victory in ACC Field Hockey Championship play since 2018.
The shutout win was Wake’s eighth of the year and the 17th game this season in which the Demon Deacons allowed two or fewer goals.
The teams appeared headed to a scoreless halftime tie, but Wake Forest broke through at the 1:02 mark on Meike Lanckohr’s 10th goal of the season off a penalty corner. Lanckohr drilled her shot home following touches by Lee Ann Gordon and Grace Delmotte for a 1-0 lead at the break.
The Demon Deacons appeared to have taken the lead seven minutes earlier on an apparent goal by Hannah Maxwell, but the play was nullified following a video review.
The second half proved a stalemate, and Wake Forest held on to shut out the Blue Devils (7-11) for the second time this season following a 3-0 win at home on Oct. 2.
#3 Virginia 1, #6 Louisville 0
Virginia grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 3:30 mark of the opening period when Taryn Tkachuk took a pass from Caroline Nemac on the left side and flipped in a nifty backhanded shot for her third goal of the season.
That held up for the duration of the match, though the Cardinals outshot the Cavaliers 13-4 and narrowly missed on several prime scoring chances. Second-team All-ACC goalkeeper Jet Trimborn made five saves for Virginia en route to her fifth shutout of the year. Sophomore back Jans Croon added a key defensive save early in the fourth period.
UVA has now reached the ACC Field Hockey Championship semifinals each of the last eight years (including 2017 when the Cavaliers were the tournament’s No. 1 seed).
Virginia entered Tuesday evening’s match ranked No. 5 nationally in the latest NFHCA poll and the Cardinals (12-7) were ranked 12th.
