GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Champion Louisville earned four of the five season awards, while Wake Forest claimed another to headline the 2022 All-ACC Volleyball honors announced Monday.
Louisville graduate student outside hitter Claire Chaussee earned ACC Player of the Year, while her teammate, senior middle blocker Amaya Tillman was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
Louisville’s Raquel Lazaro was tabbed the ACC Setter of the Year and Wake Forest’s Emma Farrell was voted the ACC Freshman of the Year.
After leading the Cardinals to a regular season 26-2 regular-season record and third consecutive ACC Championship, Dani Busboom Kelly was named the ACC Coach of the Year for the third straight year and third time in her career.
ACC season awards, as well as the All-ACC teams, were determined by a vote of the league’s 15 head coaches.
Chaussee leads the Cardinals with 3.81 kills per set to fuel the Louisville offense. She has tallied 370 kills this season and registered four double-doubles, logging 10 or more kills 20 times. She helped keep Louisville’s hopes at a share of the ACC title alive with a season-high 27 kills in a five-set victory over Georgia Tech. The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native was named ACC Player of the Week five times during the season.
Tillman leads the conference in blocks per set with 1.53, totaling 141 on the season. The two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year (2020) is tied for sixth nationally in blocks per set and tied for 25
th-most blocks this season. She posted a season-best 10 blocks against Pitt and registered 15 games with five or more blocks.
Lazaro, a graduate transfer, amassed 925 assists this season running Cardinals’ offense, averaging 9.95 assists per set. With six double-doubles this season, Lazaro recorded a season-best 57 assists in Louisville’s five-set comeback over Georgia Tech. The Málaga, Spain, native helped lead the Cardinals to their third consecutive league title, clinching a share after a 3-0 sweep of Notre Dame on Wednesday where she had 29 assists.
Farrell impressed across the board with 463 digs in her freshman campaign, averaging 4.41 digs per set to lead the ACC. The Demon Deacons’ .552 winning percentage in 2022 is their best since the 2010 season. Farrell stood as the ACC digs-per-set individual leader for a majority of the season. She was named ACC Volleyball Freshman of the Week twice throughout the season.
Under Busboom Kelly’s direction, Louisville worked its way to the program’s fourth ACC title in six seasons. With a 26-2 record, the ACC Co-Champion earned a No. 1 seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Louisville is second nationally in blocks per set and 10thd nationally in hitting percentage (.289). The Cardinals face the second most difficult schedule in the nation, owning eight wins against ranked opponents in 2022.
All four award winners were named to the All-ACC Teams with Chaussee, Tillman and Lazaro earning first-team honors, while Lazaro was named to the All-Freshman team.
Louisville, Pitt, Florida State and Georgia Tech each had five student-athletes on the All-ACC Teams. Twelve of the league’s 15 teams are represented across the league’s all-conference teams.
Five ACC volleyball teams earned spots in the 2022 NCAA Championship, announced Sunday night on the NCAA Selection Show, highlighted by Louisville being named a No. 1 seed.
The Cardinals earned the conference’s NCAA automatic qualification and is one of the four No. 1 seeds in the 64-team field. This season, the top 32 teams were seeded on a national basis across eight seed lines. Seeds one through four are one seeds, five through eight are two seeds, nine through 12 are three seeds, etc. Teams that were seeded No. 17 through 32 are the five, six, seven and eight seeds.
ACC Co-Champion Pitt (27-3) is a No. 2 seed, while Georgia Tech (20-7) is a No. 5 seed. The league saw two teams earn No. 7 seeds in Florida State and Miami. The ACC’s five top-eight seeds are the second most of any conference.
The first and second rounds will be Dec. 1-3 on campus sites in a single-elimination first-round competition on ESPN+. Regionals will take place from Dec. 8-10, while semifinals will be held Dec. 16 on ESPN, times TBA. The National Championship will take place Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The semifinals and championship will be held in CHI Health Center Arena in Omaha, Nebraska.
Boston College, Clemson and Wake Forest will all compete in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC). Wake Forest (16-13) will host Coppin State (23-10) on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m., Boston College (19-13) will host Buffalo on Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. and Clemson (13-17) will head to face Toledo (18-12) on Dec. 3 at 4 p.m.
