GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame junior attackman Pat Kavanagh was named the ACC Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Virginia freshman goalie Matthew Nunes and Notre Dame freshman faceoff specialist Will Lynch earned Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Kavanagh was honored for the second time this season (Feb. 22), while Nunes was selected for the defensive honor for the third time this season (Feb. 15, March 9).
A native of Rockville Centre, New York, Kavanagh led the Irish with seven points off three goals and four assists in the 16-15 road win over No. 10 Duke on Saturday. Kavanagh's seven points were two more than any other player in the ACC recorded for the week. The attackman now has 40 points on the season (17G, 23A) and has totaled 16 points (6G, 10A) over his last two games.
Nunes made 14 saves in the Cavaliers’ 11-4 win over No. 15 North Carolina Saturday. UVa held the Tar Heels to their lowest single-game goal total since 2006. Nunes faced 18 shots on net to register a .778 save percentage. The Woodlands, Texas native made four saves in each of the game’s first three periods. Nunes and the Cavaliers’ defense helped shut out UNC for 19 minutes, 52 seconds, a span in which UVa scored five unanswered goals. He also picked up three ground balls and registered one caused turnover. Nunes currently leads the ACC in goals-against average (10.45) and save percentage (.531) this season.
Lynch had one of his best games of his young career on Saturday in a win at No. 10 Duke, winning 19-of-35 faceoffs while scoring his first collegiate goal and adding an assist. Also a native of Rockville Centre, New York, Lynch scooped up a career-high 11 groundballs in the win. Leading by one and less than 10 seconds left in the game, Lynch won the faceoff that secured the win for the Irish.
Four ACC teams are ranked in the latest USILA/Dynamic 2022 Men’s Coaches poll this week: Virginia (6), Notre Dame (10), Duke (13) and North Carolina (15).
The Fighting Irish travel to Marquette for a 5 p.m. non-conference matchup on Tuesday. Virginia travels to Duke for a 6 p.m. Thursday clash on ACC Network. With a win, UVa clinches at least a share of the ACC championship. North Carolina entertains Syracuse at 4 p.m. Saturday on ESPNU, while UVa plays host to Quinnipiac at 8 p.m. Saturday on ACC Network in non-conference action.
