League-Record Six ACC Teams Advance to Quarterfinals of NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – For the second time in conference history, six Atlantic Coast Conference teams have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship. The six teams matches the league record set in 2013.

Overall, the ACC moved to 20-1-3 in the NCAA Tournament, as the league’s .896 winning percentage is the highest among all conferences. With six ACC teams advancing to the Elite Eight, only two conferences are represented in the quarterfinals with the Big Ten sending two teams.

Second-seeded Wake Forest opened the day with a 1-0 win over third-seeded Ohio State, as Emily Murphy’s 76th-minute tally proved to be the difference. The Demon Deacons advanced to the national quarterfinals for the first time since 2011 and third time overall.

Second-seeded North Carolina advanced to the quarterfinals following a 3-0 win over sixth-seeded Minnesota for the program’s 150th NCAA Tournament victory. No other school has had more than 83 wins during the 43 years the NCAA has sponsored a women's soccer championship.

Top-seeded Duke cruised past fifth-seeded Michigan State, 2-0, as the Blue Devils have now outscored their opponents in the NCAA Tournament, 13-0. The win marks Duke’s 10th trip to the national quarterfinals in the last 14 seasons.

Fourth-seeded Notre Dame tallied back-to-back goals in the 25th and 30th minutes and eventually blanked top-seeded Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi. Holding the Bulldogs to just one shot on goal, the Fighting Irish clinched their 17th appearance in the quarterfinals.

After third-seeded Stanford and second-seeded Arkansas played to a 1-1 draw, the Cardinal sealed their spot in the quarterfinals advancing on penalty kicks, 4-2. This is Stanford’s second straight trip to the quarterfinals after not advancing to the Elite Eight since 2019 prior to last season’s run. The Cardinal played in the College Cup final in both those seasons.

Seventh-seeded Virginia Tech continued its upset run with a 1-0 triumph over third-seeded Iowa in Los Angeles. Allie George’s looping shot beat the outstretched Hawkeye goalkeeper in the 80th minute to send the Hokies to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2013.

The quarterfinals will be played on either November 29 or 30. All four matchups will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

The 43rd annual NCAA Women’s College Cup will be played December 6 and 9 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, with North Carolina and the city of Cary serving as hosts. The first national semifinal will be played and broadcast live on ESPNU at 5 p.m. ET Friday, December 6, followed by the second semifinal beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. ET live on ESPNU. The national championship match will take place at 5 p.m. ET on Monday, December 9, and will also be broadcast live on ESPNU.
