Boston College, Syracuse Advance to NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Boston College and Syracuse claimed second-round wins Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship. The No. 2 seed Eagles ousted Princeton, 21-16, while the No. 3 seed Orange defeated Stony Brook, 15-10.
 
The quarterfinals will be contested Thursday, with Syracuse playing host to No. 6 seed Yale at 2:30 p.m. and BC entertaining Michigan at 5 p.m. Both matches will air on ESPNU.
 
In a high-scoring battle, Boston College outlasted Princeton, 21-16, on Sunday in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Six players netted hat tricks with Belle Smith tallying a season-high five goals. She also turned in two caused turnovers, four ground balls and four draw controls.
 
Syracuse topped Stony Brook, 15-10, on Sunday in Syracuse, New York, avenging a regular-season loss to the Seawolves. Kate Mashewske broke the single-game school record with 20 draw controls, helping Syracuse win 22-of-29 in the game. It matches the highest single-game total in a Division I game this season. Emma Tyrrell led the Orange offense with five goals and an assist.
 
No. 5 seed Virginia topped LIU, 21-6, on Friday in Charlottesville, Virginia, but was eliminated by Florida, 13-8, on Sunday despite 11 saves from Mel Josephson.
 
No. 7 seed Notre Dame topped Coastal Carolina, 24-6, in a Friday first-round game in South Bend, Indiana. The Fighting Irish’s season came to an end Sunday as they fell to Michigan, 15-14, on a last-second goal.
 
Duke fell to Loyola Maryland, 16-11, on Friday in the first round in Philadelphia. North Carolina lost to Florida, 17-8, on Friday in the first round in Charlottesville.
 
The winner of the four quarterfinal games will advance to the national semifinals at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. The semifinal games will be shown on ESPNU at 3 and 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 24.  The championship game will air on ESPN on Sunday, May 26, at noon.
 
ACC teams have won 13 national titles, and at least one ACC team has played in the national title game in 13 of the last 14 seasons. The ACC has had at least one team in the national semifinals in 33 straight tournaments and 37 times overall. ACC teams have made 30 championship game appearances and 55 national semifinal appearances.
