2024 NCAA Tournament Bracket
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame and Virginia punched their tickets to the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship Weekend with quarterfinal wins this weekend. The Fighting Irish and Cavaliers move on to the NCAA semifinals next Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The top-seeded Fighting Irish knocked off No. 8 seed Georgetown, 16-11, on Saturday in Hempstead, New York. No. 6 seed Virginia rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to oust No. 3 seed Johns Hopkins, 11-10, Sunday in a double-overtime thriller in Towson, Maryland.
Notre Dame advances to play No. 5 seed Denver at noon Saturday in the national semifinals, while Virginia faces No. 7 seed Maryland at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be televised on ESPN2. The championship game will be played Monday, May 27, on ESPN.
This marks the 25th time in which the ACC will have at least two representatives in the NCAA semifinals. At least one ACC team has advanced to the national semifinals in 49 of the 53 years in which the NCAA Tournament has been contested. The ACC owns 18 NCAA Championship in men’s lacrosse, and the five active ACC teams have combined for 26 national championships, including 10 of the last 15.
Notre Dame (13-1) avenged its lone loss of the season, rolling past Georgetown and winning its 12th straight game. The Fighting Irish advanced to championship weekend for the seventh time in program history. Chris Kavanagh tied his career high with eight points off five goals and three assists, while his brother Pat Kavanagh also had a hat trick and finished with four points off three goals and an assist. Will Lynch dominated at the faceoff dot, winning 21-of-26 attempts while also scooping up 12 ground balls and scoring a goal.
Connor Shellenberger scored with 1:40 remaining in double overtime to cap Virginia’s rally against Johns Hopkins. The Cavaliers (11-5) are making their 26th appearance in the national semifinals, including their fourth in the last five tournaments. UVA held Hopkins scoreless for the final 22 minutes, 56 seconds of the game. Freshman McCabe Millon recorded a hat trick and assisted on three more goals, while Shellenberger and Jack Boyden also recorded hat tricks.
Duke’s season came to a close with a 14-11 defeat to Maryland on Saturday in Hempstead, New York. Dyson Williams scored six goals to lead the Blue Devils (13-5), while Brennan O’Neill recorded a hat trick.
Syracuse’s season ended Sunday with a 10-8 loss to Denver in Towson, Maryland. Michael Leo led the Orange (12-5) with three goals, while Sam English recorded two goals and two assists.
