Syracuse’s Spallina, Duke’s Maguire Claim ACC Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Syracuse junior attackman Joey Spallina earned Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honors, and Duke junior short-stick midfielder Aidan Maguire was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week for games played from March 31-April 6. Both earned their respective honors for the third time this season.

Spallina scored four goals and added an assist in the Orange’s 14-9 win over No. 5 Notre Dame on Saturday, April 5. The native of Mount Sinai, New York, put up the big numbers against a Fighting Irish defense that ranked in the top 10 defensively entering the weekend, and while guarded heavily by All-American Shawn Lyght. Spallina scored the tying goal at 3-3 and the go-ahead goal in what proved to be a nine-goal Syracuse run. Spallina completed the second-quarter hat trick to make it 8-3 with 69 seconds left in the period before adding an insurance goal three minutes into the fourth for an 11-7 lead.

Maguire had a career day in Duke’s 12-7 win at No. 16 Boston University on Saturday. The native of Hingham, Massachusetts, recorded a career-high eight ground balls and caused three turnovers and added a career-best two goals to lift the Blue Devils to victory. Helping anchor an outstanding defensive effort, Maguire and the Blue Devils held the Terriers without goals for spans of 17:39 (3rd-4th) 14:49 (1st-2nd) and 13:45 (1st). It is the first time this season Duke has held an opponent without a goal for at least 10 minutes three times in a game. Maguire’s three caused turnovers give him a conference-best 23 for the year, leaving him three shy of tying for fifth in NCAA history for defensive midfielders.

Four ACC teams are ranked in the top 10 of the latest USILA Coaches poll, led by Syracuse rising to No. 4 and followed by North Carolina at No. 7, Notre Dame at No. 9 and Duke at No. 12.

League play continues on Saturday, April 12, with North Carolina visiting Duke at 4 p.m. ET on ACC Network and Virginia traveling to Notre Dame at 5 p.m. ET on ESPNU. In a top-five non-conference battle, Syracuse faces top-ranked Cornell on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET on Long Island.
