CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (theACC.com) – Senior Maddie Howe scored four goals, including the eventual game winner with 2:59 remaining, to propel No. 4 seed Notre Dame to a 17-16 triumph over No. 5 Duke Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Notre Dame (9-5) moves on to play top-seeded North Carolina at noon Friday. The teams’ regular-season matchup went down to the wire, with UNC eking out an 11-10 road win.
Kasey Choma and Madison Ahern each recorded hat tricks, as eight Fighting Irish players cracked the scoring column. Catriona Barry racked up four goals for Duke (9-7), while Maddie Jenner scored three goals and piled up a game-high nine draw controls.
The Irish scored the game’s first three goals and never trailed but held off a big Duke rally in the second half. After pulling out to a five-goal lead, 12-7, at the half, Notre Dame held a 14-9 edge with 25:15 remaining before Duke rallied by scoring five of the next six goals, tying the game at 15 with on a Jenner score with 8:20 left.
Choma and Barry alternated goals before Howe fired in a bouncing shot to give the Irish the 17-16 lead with 2:59 remaining. The Blue Devils had one last chance for a tying score but goalie Bridget Deehan stopped Barry on a free position shot with two minutes left, and Notre Dame was able to run the clock out from there.
The 2021 ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship continues Wednesday with No. 2 seed Syracuse playing No. 7 seed Virginia Tech and No. 3 seed Boston College taking on No. 6 seed Virginia.
The semifinals will take place on Friday at noon and 2:30 p.m., while the championship game will be played Sunday at noon. All seven games of the tournament will be televised on ACC Network.
