This Week in ACC Baseball

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.org) – The 14 teams throughout Atlantic Coast Conference have gotten off to a blistering start throughout the 2024 season, combining for an 86-21 record. The mark gives the ACC the highest winning percentage among all conferences, winning 80.37 percent of all contests.

Both Clemson and Miami will play three games this weekend against ranked opponents. The 10th-ranked Tigers will meet No. 19 South Carolina in the annual Palmetto Series with one game in Clemson, South Carolina, one game on South Carolina’s campus in Columbia, South Carolina, and a neutral-site game at Segra Park in Columbia, South Carolina, the home of the Columbia Fireflies, Single-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Miami will host in-state rival and fourth-ranked Florida for a three-game set at Mark Light Field in Coral Gables, Florida.

The ACC boasts three undefeated teams in No. 12 Duke, No. 13 Virginia, and Florida State. With three undefeated teams, the ACC leads all conferences.

Six teams throughout the ACC are ranked in the most recent D1Baseball poll. Wake Forest leads the country as the No. 1 team, while Clemson stays steady at No. 10 and Duke holds true at No. 12. Virginia climbs to No. 13, while NC State moves to No. 14 and North Carolina begins the weekend at No. 17.
 
Noting ACC Baseball – Feb. 29
  • The ACC has posted the highest winning percentage of any conference to begin the season. Going into the weekend, the ACC boasts an 86-21 record - good for an .804 winning percentage.
  • Three of the 14 remaining undefeated teams hail from the ACC with Duke, Florida State, and Virginia all boasting perfect records. The ACC’s three undefeated teams are the most among any conference.
  • Going into weekend action, the ACC leads all conferences in batting average (.326), on-base percentage (.442), hits (1,215), doubles (249), home runs (201), total bases (2,125), sacrifice flies (67), and intentional walks (13).
  • Duke and Georgia Tech are tied for the second-most home runs in Division I with 23 each. Additionally, Miami (22) and Virginia Tech (21) rank fourth and fifth, respectively.
  • Georgia Tech freshman outfielder Drew Burress leads the country with nine home runs through his first eight collegiate games. Daniel Cuvet (UM), Vance Honeycutt (UNC), and James Tibbs III (FSU) all rank in the top 10 nationally with five home runs apiece. Burress launched four home runs on Tuesday night against Georgia State, becoming the first ACC student-athlete to do so since Louisville’s Brendan McKay on April 25, 2017.
  • Florida State pitching leads the nation in strikeouts per nine innings, averaging 15.6 to begin the season. Seminole right-handed pitcher Cam Leiter ranks third nationally with 21 strikeouts, while teammate Jamie Arnold is fourth with 20 punchouts. The Seminoles’ duo have won the first two ACC Pitcher of the Week awards.  
  • The Seminoles also lead the ACC in batting average, hitting .368 as a team, which ranks fifth nationally. Virginia’s .365 team average is good for eighth nationally, while Duke narrowly misses the top 10 with a .358 batting average.
  • Boston College is one of the most sure-handed defensive teams in the country, boasting a .995 fielding percentage, which is the second-best in Division I baseball. Notre Dame (.988) and Pitt (.987) rank 12th and 13th, respectively.
  • Miami freshman Daviel Cuvet ranks fourth nationally with a .606 batting average. Cuvet currently leads the ACC in batting average (.630), slugging percentage (1.370), on-base percentage (.697), runs scored (14), hits (14), home runs (5), and RBI (14).
  • Duke’s Charlie Beilenson leads the country in saves with four, while Virginia’s Aidan Teel (3) and Notre Dame’s Nate Hardman (2) both rank inside the top 10.
  • ACC Baseball begins conference play next weekend, March 8-10. The premier weekend series will feature No. 1 Wake Forest hosting No. 12 Duke for a three-game series in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Boston College will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, to meet No. 14 NC State. Virginia Tech will host Notre Dame in Blacksburg, Virginia, while No. 17 North Carolina will welcome Pitt to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Miami will open conference play with a three-game series in Coral Gables, Florida, against No. 13 Virginia.
