This Week in ACC Baseball

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Seven teams throughout the Atlantic Coast Conference are ranked in this week’s D1Baseball poll, matching the conference’s highest total for a week this season. Clemson leads the way at No. 2, while Duke and Florida State enter the top 10 at No. 7 and No. 10, respectively. Also ranked are No. 11 Virginia, No. 13 North Carolina, No. 14 Wake Forest and No. 16 Virginia Tech.
 
No. 2 Clemson and No. 13 North Carolina lead the Atlantic and Coastal Divisions, respectively. The Tigers’ 10-2 (.833) mark in ACC play marks the highest winning percentage in ACC games. Clemson is tied for the nation’s lead with 28 wins on the season.
 
ACC squads knocked off a pair of ranked opponents in midweek matchups. On Tuesday, No. 10 Florida State walloped No. 24 Florida, 19-4, in Tallahassee, while No. 14 Wake Forest defeated No. 20 Coastal Carolina, 12-3, in Winston-Salem.
 
Noting ACC Baseball – April 11
  • The ACC boasts the second-best conference RPI throughout the country while leading the country in opponent strength of schedule, road success, and road RPI. Eight ACC teams remain ranked inside of the top 25 of the RPI. Clemson leads the country at No. 1 while No. 3 Florida State, No. 4 North Carolina, No. 13 Virginia, No. 14 Wake Forest and No. 16 Duke all remain inside the top 25 nationally. A total of 11 of the ACC’s 14  teams rank in the top 65 nationally.
  • The ACC leads all conferences in batting average (.303), on-base percentage (.411), runs (3,709), hits (4,614), doubles (890), triples (103), total bases (7,930), runs batted in (3,394) and sacrifice flies (220).
  • Georgia Tech’s Danny Hall enters the weekend with 1,398 wins, With two wins will become just the 11th coach in Division I history to notch 1,400 career victories. Six of the previous 10 coaches to do so have ties to current or future ACC programs.
  • The Tar Heels’ 24-game home winning streak leads the nation and dates back to May 9, 2023. Boston College’s seven-game winning streak on the road is tied with Bryant for the longest in the country.
  • Two conference games will air on ACC Network this weekend. Miami’s trip to No. 10 Florida State on Thursday will be the first game, while NC State’s Saturday game at No. 2 Clemson will be the other. Mike Ferrin and Gaby Sanchez will be on the call for both games.
  • Wake Forest’s Nick Kurtz was named the ACC Baseball Player of the Week, while Clemson’s Aidan Knaak and Louisville’s Sebastian Gongora were named Co-Pitchers of the Week. Kurtz was also named the National Player of the Week by D1Baseball.
  • Wake Forest’s Chase Burns leads all active Division I pitchers with 314 career strikeouts. This season, Burns has fanned 97 batters to lead the country. Florida State’s Jamie Arnold has punched out 69 hitters, ranking second in the ACC and eighth nationally.
  • Boston College’s Cameron O’Leary leads the country with 41 walks drawn on the season, while Nick Kurtz (WF) ranks second in walks drawn per game at 1.35.
  • Kurtz has homered in six straight games for the Demon Deacons entering the weekend. The junior from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, sits just two games shy of tying the NCAA record for most consecutive games with a home run.
  • Georgia Tech’s Drew Burress ranks eighth in the country with 15 home runs on the season, while Carson DeMartini (VT), Harrison Didawick (UVA), and James Tibbs III (FSU) sit with 14 apiece and are tied for 14th nationally.
  • Tibbs III leads the country with 54 runs batted in this season. North Carolina’s Casey Cook (48) and Virginia’s Didawick (47) rank seventh and ninth in the category, respectively.
  • Duke’s Ben Miller leads the nation with 61 hits, averaging 1.85 per game, which also tops Division I baseball.
  • North Carolina’s Matthew Matthijs leads all pitchers nationally with 11 wins, while Duke’s Charlie Beilenson ranks third with eight saves.
