CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Seven teams throughout the Atlantic Coast Conference are ranked in this week’s D1Baseball poll, the second-highest total of any conference. Clemson leads the way at No. 2, while Duke and Florida State enter the top 10 at No. 7 and No. 10, respectively. Also ranked are No. 11 Virginia, No. 13 North Carolina, No. 14 Wake Forest and No. 16 Virginia Tech.
No. 6 Clemson and No. 10 North Carolina lead the Atlantic and Coastal Divisions, respectively. The Tar Heels’ 14-4 (.833) mark in ACC play marks the highest winning percentage in ACC games. The Tar Heels could become the first team to punch their ticket to the 2024 ACC Baseball Championship at Truist Field in Charlotte, North Carolina, this weekend.
Two series throughout the ACC will feature a pair of ranked opponents. Seventh-ranked Duke will hit the road to Blacksburg, Virginia, for three Coastal Division games against No. 23 Virginia Tech. Both Duke and Virginia Tech are two of the three teams that are tied for second place in the Coastal Division, both boasting an 11-7 mark in ACC play. Meanwhile, in Atlantic Division play, No. 8 Florida State will travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for a three-game series against No. 12 Wake Forest.
Noting ACC Baseball – April 18
- The ACC boasts the second-best conference RPI throughout the country while leading the country in opponent strength of schedule, road success, and road RPI. Six ACC teams remain ranked inside of the top 25 of the RPI. Clemson leads the country at No. 1 while No. 5 Florida State, No. 6 North Carolina, No. 11 Wake Forest, No. 12 Virginia and No. 25 Duke all remain inside the top 25 nationally. A total of 10 of the ACC’s 14 teams rank in the top 50 nationally.
- D1Basebll projects nine ACC teams to reach the NCAA Tournament in its most recent Field of 64. Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina, Virginia, Wake Forest and Duke are all projected as regional hosts, while Virginia Tech, NC State and Boston College are also slotted in the postseason field.
- The ACC leads all conferences in batting average (.303), runs (4,141), hits (5,223), doubles (994), triples (114), total bases (8,944), runs batted in (3,787) and sacrifice flies (242).
- With Sunday’s 11-7 victory over No. 16 Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech’s Danny Hall became just the 11th coach in Division I history to notch 1,400 career victories. Six of the previous 10 coaches to do so have ties to current or future ACC programs.
- North Carolina’s program-record 27-game home winning streak was snapped on Tuesday evening, previously dating back to May 9, 2023. The Tar Heels enter the weekend tied with Florida State for the longest active winning streak in ACC play at four games apiece.
- Boston College’s seven-game winning streak on the road is the longest active streak in the country. The Eagles will put their streak on the line this weekend with a three-game set against Notre Dame.
- Two conference games will air on ACC Network this weekend. The in-state rivalry between No. 10 North Carolina and NC State on Thursday will be the first game, while Louisville’s Saturday game at Miami will be the other. Mike Ferrin and Gaby Sanchez will be on the call for both games.
- Wake Forest’s Nick Kurtz was named the ACC Baseball Player of the Week, while Clemson’s Aidan Knaak was named ACC Pitcher of the Week.
- Wake Forest’s Chase Burns leads all active Division I pitchers with 322 career strikeouts. This season, Burns has fanned 105 batters to lead the country. Florida State’s Jamie Arnold has punched out 78 hitters, ranking second in the ACC and seventh nationally.
- Burns’ Demon Deacon teammate Nick Kurtz leads all active Division I players with 151 walks drawn, while also rankings third in home runs (56) and slugging percentage (.748).
- Boston College’s Cameron O’Leary ranks fourth in country with 44 walks drawn on the season, while Kurtz (40) and Pitt’s Luke Cantwell (39) rank ninth and 10th, respectively.
- Duke’s Ben Miller ranks fourth nationally with a .452 batting average on the season. Miller ranks second in the ACC and seventh in the country for hits (61), trailing just Florida State’s Cam Smith, who ranks fourth nationally with 62 base knocks. Miller also ranks second throughout the country in hits per game, averaging 1.85.
- Florida State’s Jamie Arnold ranks second throughout Division I baseball with a 1.32 ERA this season.
- Kurtz leads the ACC with 17 home runs this season, including 14 in his last 10 games. The 17 round-trippers ranks ninth nationally, while Georgia Tech’s Drew Burress ranks 10th with 16 long balls.
- Virginia’s Harrison Didawick has scored 53 runs this season to lead the ACC and rank ninth nationally, while North Carolina’s Vance Honeycutt is one spot behind with 52 runs scored.
- The Seminoles’ James Tibbs III ranks third in Division I baseball with 58 runs batted in on the season, driving in 1.61 runs per game, which is the second-most in the country.
- Boston College’s Sam McNulty and Virginia’s Luke Hanson share the ACC lead for sacrifice bunts with five apiece. The duo is tied for fifth nationally in the category.
- Wake Forest’s Nick Kurtz has posted the third-highest slugging percentage this season (.903) while Florida State’s Tibbs III ranks ninth nationally at .849.
- Louisville’s JT Benson has stolen 24 bases on the season which is the eight-most in the country.
- North Carolina’s Matthew Matthijs leads all pitchers nationally with 11 wins, while Florida State’s Jamie Arnold and Wake Forest’s Chase Burns are tied for fourth with seven victories each.
- Duke’s Charlie Beilenson ranks fourth throughout the country with eight saves.
