This Week in ACC Baseball

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – With just two weekends remaining in the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball regular season, eight teams have already clinched a berth in the 2024 ACC Baseball Championship, slated for May 21-26 at Truist Field in Charlotte, North Carolina. Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia and Virginia Tech have secured their place in the postseason tournament, while Georgia Tech and Wake Forest could do so this weekend.
 
Clemson, Duke, Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia were all slated a projected regional hosts in the most recent D1Baseball Projected Field of 64. Additionally, NC State and Wake Forest entered the project field as No. 2 seeds, while Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech were slated as No. 3 seeds.
 
Seven teams throughout the ACC are ranked in this week’s D1Baseball Top 25, highlighted by No. 2 Clemson. The Tigers are followed by No. 8 Florida State, No. 9 Duke, No. 10 Virginia, No. 11 North Carolina, No. 12 Wake Forest and No. 23 NC State.
 
Noting ACC Baseball – May 9
  • The ACC boasts the second-best conference RPI throughout the country while leading the country in road success and road RPI.
  • Seven ACC teams remain ranked inside of the top 25 of the RPI. Clemson leads the conference at No. 4 while No. 6 North Carolina, No. 7 Florida State, No. 11 Wake Forest, No. 12 Virginia, No. 18 Duke and No. 24 NC State.  Nine of the ACC’s 14 teams rank in the top 50 nationally.
  • The ACC leads all conferences in batting average (.301), on-base percentage (.407), runs (5,374), hits (6,768), doubles (1,313), triples (103), total bases (11,637), runs batted in (4,919) and sacrifice flies (316).
  • Two ACC teams rank in the top 10 nationally in winning percentage. Clemson begins the weekend fourth nationally (.787), while Florida State sits at seventh in the country (.783).
  • Clemson’s Blake Wright was named the ACC Baseball Player of the Week, while Wake Forest’s Chase Burns was named Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this season.
  • Burns leads all active Division I pitchers with 344 career strikeouts. This season, Burns has fanned 140 batters to lead the country. Florida State’s Jamie Arnold has punched out 101 hitters, ranking second in the ACC and seventh nationally.
  • Among active Division I baseball players, no one has played in more games than NC State’s Alec Makarewicz, who has logged 248 career games played. On the mound, no one has pitched in more games than Virginia’s Angelo Torres, who has logged 112 appearances.
  • Wake Forest’s Nick Kurtz leads all active players with 171 walks drawn. He also ranks second in on-base percentage (.508), fifth in home runs (58) and fifth in slugging percentage (.735).
  • Kurtz leads the country with 60 walks drawn this season, including a national-best average of 1.40 walks per game.
  • Virginia is batting .342 on the season, sitting second nationally in the category. Virginia Tech ranks 10th in batting average, hitting .317 as a team.
  • As a team, Notre Dame leads the country with a .984 fielding percentage this season.
  • Virginia has logged 594 hits on the season and ranks second in the country in that category.
  • Duke’s pitching staff is allowing just 7.00 hits per nine innings, which is second-best in the country.
  • Pitching staffs around the ACC have been dominating opposing hitters. Wake Forest (11.6), Florida State (11.5) and Duke (11.1) all rank in the top seven nationally in strikeouts per nine innings.
  • North Carolina’s Matthew Matthijs leads all pitchers nationally with 11 wins, while Wake Forest’s Chase Burns is tied for fifth with nine wins.
