CARY, N.C. (theACC.com) – Syracuse, Miami, Virginia and wake Forest all won second-round matches on Thursday at the 2019 ACC Women’s Tennis Championship. No. 9 Syracuse defeated No. 8 Georgia Tech, 4-3, No. 5 Miami took down No. 13 Virginia Tech, 4-1, No. 7 Virginia earned a 4-1 win over No. 10 Notre Dame, and No. 6 Wake Forest was victorious, 4-2, over No. 11 Boston College.
Syracuse 4, Georgia Tech 3
Georgia Tech’s Nami Otsuka and Gia Cohen finished the first match, a 6-2 win over Sofya Golubovskaya and Dina Hegab at No. 2 doubles. Nadia Gizdova and Kenya Jones clinched the doubles point for the Yellow Jackets after defeating Guzal Yusupova and Sofya Treshcheva at the No. 3 position, 6-2. Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez, the No. 56-ranked doubles team nationally, finished the match on court three with a 6-3 win over Vicstoria Flores and Valeriya Deminova.
Golubovskaya earned the first singles point of the match and defeated Otsuka at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-2. Flores gave Georgia Tech back the lead, 2-1, after earning the win over Maria Tritou on court five. No. 97-ranked Ramirez tied the score at 2-2 with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Deminova. Knutson, the 13th-ranked singles player nationally, defeated the 8th-ranked Jones at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3, giving Syracuse a 3-2 lead.
Georgia Tech would even the score at 3-3, after Gia Cohen took down Yusupova, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6, on court four. Hegab clinched the match for Syracuse with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.
Miami 4, Virginia Tech 1
Virginia Tech’s Natalie Novotna and Rita Pinto, ranked No. 78 in the nation in doubles, defeated the 16th-ranked Daniella Roldan and Daevenia Achong at No. 1 doubles, 6-2. Estela Perez Somarriba and Ulyana Shirokova won the match on court two, 6-3, over Nika Kozar and Nina Sorkin. The doubles point was clinched by Virginia Tech’s Elizabet Danailova and Samantha Gillas after a 7-5 win over Ana Madcur and Yuna Ito.
Miami would win the rest of the points in the match. No. 2-ranked Perez Somarriba won the No. 1 singles match over No. 88-ranked Novotna, 6-3, 6-1. Lucia Marzal defeated Pinto, 6-3, 6-4, on court five. Madcur took down Sorkin at the No. 6 spot, 6-2, 7-6, and Ito clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles.
Virginia 4, Notre Dame 1
Meghan Kelley and Hunter Bleser kicked things off for Virginia by winning the match at No. 3 doubles over Bess Waldram and Brooke Broda, 6-0. Vivian Glozman and Sofia Munera defeated Ally Bojczuk and Zoe Taylor, 6-1, on court two to clinch the doubles point for the Cavaliers.
In singles, Munera struck first, defeating Taylor at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Chloe Gullickson earned the win on court four, 6-3, 6-4, over Notre Dame’s Broda to give Virginia a 3-0 lead. Bojczuk took down Amer O’Dell at the No. 3 position, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1, to make the score 3-1 Virginia. Camille Favero clinched the match for the Cavaliers with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Maeve Koscielski at No. 6 singles.
Wake Forest 4, Boston College 2
The 70th-ranked doubles pair of Kylie Wilcox and Jackie Urbinati of Boston College took the No. 1 doubles match over No. 34-ranked Emma Davis and Chandler Carter, 6-3. Wake Forest’s M.C. Meredith and Eliza Omirou defeated Yufei Long and Dasha Possokhova at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, and Anna Ulyashchenko and Alexis Franco clinched the doubles point for the Demon Deacons with a 6-3 win over Loren Haukova and Elene Tsokilauri.
Davis, the No. 34-ranked singles player nationally, won the first singles match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over 71st-ranked Long on court one. Ulyashchenko defeated No. 116-ranked Kylie Wilcox at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-5, to give Wake Forest a 3-0 lead. Natasha Irani defeated Saby Nihalani at the No. 4 position, 6-4, 6-2, to put Boston College on the board. Omirou clinched the match for Wake Forest with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Urbinati.
Laura Lopez defeated Peyton Pesavento on court six, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, making the final score 4-2 in favor of Wake Forest.
