ACC Announces Women’s Soccer Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Duke graduate midfielder Tess Boade and Virginia junior forward Diana Ordoñez have been named ACC Women’s Soccer Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while Blue Devil sophomore defender Emily Royson has been tabbed ACC Defensive Player of the Week.

Boade helped sixth-ranked Duke to a pair of ranked wins last week, defeating No. 15 Notre Dame, 1-0, on Thursday night and top-ranked Florida State by the same margin on Sunday. The graduate student recorded the assist on the game-winner in overtime against the Fighting Irish, finding teammate Michelle Cooper for the golden goal. Boade found the back of the net in the 27th minute versus No. 1 FSU on Sunday, scoring what proved to be the game-winner as Duke defeated the nation’s top-ranked team for the first time since Oct. 9, 2005.

Ordoñez tallied seven points last week with three goals and an assist, as the Cavaliers beat Louisville (4-1) and Miami (6-1) to clinch at least a share of the ACC regular-season title. Against the Cardinals last Thursday, Ordoñez scored what proved to be the game-winning goal as she gave UVA a 2-0 lead en route to a 4-1 win. On Sunday, she delivered a pair of unassisted goals and an assist in the win over the Hurricanes to keep the Cavaliers unbeaten in ACC play. She moved into sixth place all-time at UVA in career goals - one shy of tying two-time Hermann Trophy winner Morgan Brian - and is now eighth all-time in career points at UVA with 92.

Royson led a stellar defensive effort as the Blue Devils posted a pair of shutouts, limiting Notre Dame to just one shot on goal and Florida State to four. She charted an assist on the game-winner against the Seminoles on Sunday. The sophomore has played every minute in Duke’s last nine matches, helping the Blue Devils post four consecutive shutouts.

ACC regular-season play wraps up Thursday with seven matches on the slate, highlighted by second-ranked Virginia visiting top-ranked Florida State for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The winner of that contest will earn the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ACC Women’s Soccer Championship.

Six teams will qualify for this year’s ACC Championship. The first round is set for Oct. 31 with the No. 1 and 2 seeded teams earning byes, while the No. 3 seeded team plays host to No. 6, and the No. 4 team plays host to No. 5. The winners will then advance to Cary for the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 5, followed by the title game on Nov. 7.
