CARY, N.C. (theACC.com) – Led by two second-half goals from Taylor Huff and Wrianna Hudson, third-seeded Florida State claimed its fifth straight Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer title with a 3-2 win over fourth-seeded North Carolina Sunday afternoon at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.
With the win, the Seminoles extended their unbeaten streak in the ACC Championship to 12 straight matches, as their fifth straight championship title is the longest streak since North Carolina won five-in-a-row from 2005-09. The Seminoles have won 11 ACC titles in program history, as every championship has come within the last 14 years. It marks the third straight title for Head Coach Brian Pensky.
The combined five goals scored were the most scored in a final since 2018 when Florida State also defeated North Carolina 3-2.
After the teams played 30 scoreless minutes, UNC was awarded a penalty in the 31st minute. Junior Kate Faasse stepped up and hit the back of the net and gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead.
Florida State responded quickly after a corner kick was bounced around and found the feet of Seminole midfielder Taylor Suarez. After a couple of touches, the freshman fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box and tied the match at 1-1.
Just before halftime, Faasee got on the scoresheet once again when she headed in a cross from Bella Sember and gave UNC a 2-1 lead at the break. The goal marked her 16th of the season which ties for the conference lead. After 45 minutes, the Tar Heels outshot the Seminoles, 7-4.
After a back-and-forth start to the second half, Florida State earned a penalty in the 63rd minute. Following a discussion between FSU’s Taylor Huff and Jordynn Dudley, Huff decided to take the shot and equalized the match at 2-2. The goal was Huff’s 12th tally of the season.
With the match beginning to shift in favor of the Seminoles, Dudley found the ball at her feet inside the box and flicked a pass to freshman striker Wrianna Hudson. Hudson fended off a Tar Heel defender and fired a shot into the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal in the 67th minute.
UNC managed just three shots for the remainder of the match and could not find an equalizer.
With two goals and an assist in her three matches of the 2024 Ally ACC Women’s Soccer Championship, Huff was named the Tournament MVP. She becomes the fourth different Seminole in the last five years to win MVP honors.
