Five ACC Teams Advance to Third Round of NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The second round of the 2025 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship wrapped up on Friday evening, and five Atlantic Coast Conference teams secured spots into the third round, beginning Sunday, November 23. The five teams are tied for the most among all conferences.

No. 1 seed Virginia, No. 2 seed Duke and No. 3 seed Florida State advanced to the third round on Thursday with shutout victories. On Friday, top-seeded Stanford and North Carolina rounded out the ACC contingent in the round of 16. Clemson, Louisville, Notre Dame and Wake Forest all saw their seasons end in the second round.

Virginia found goals in each half to blank eighth-seeded Penn State on Thursday. Maggie Cagle scored in the 33rd minute before Lia Godfrey, the 2025 ACC Midfielder of the Year, sealed the victory in the 68th minute, sending UVA to the third round for the first time since 2022. Virginia will host fourth-seeded Washington on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.

Duke junior forward Mia Minestrella continued her scoring streak with her fourth goal of the NCAA Tournament to help the Blue Devils advance. She found the back of the net in the 35th minute, lifting Duke to its 12th win in its last 13 second-round appearances. The Blue Devils will host third-seeded Kansas in the round of 16 on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.

With a 1-0 victory over Lipscomb, the Seminoles advanced to the third round for the 22nd time and the seventh time in the last eight years after missing the third round last season. Heather Gilchrist provided the game-winning goal in the 24th minute, and the FSU defense held the Bison to just four shots. Florida State awaits second-seeded Georgetown in the third round, which advanced in penalties against seventh-seeded West Virginia. Kickoff is set for noon ET in Washington, D.C.

The unseeded Tar Heels needed penalties after their match with third-seeded Texas Tech ended 1-1. UNC converted four of its five penalties, while the Red Raiders’ chance to tie sailed over the bar, sealing the Tar Heels’ spot in the third round. It marked North Carolina’s penalty shootout in the NCAA Tournament since the 2019 national championship match. The Tar Heels will look to continue their pursuit of back-to-back national titles on Monday at second-seeded TCU at 2 p.m. ET.

After a back-and-forth first half, Stanford scored three unanswered goals in the final 17 minutes to pull away from eighth-seeded Alabama and advance, 7-3. The Cardinal posted 40 shots on the evening, tied for the second-most by an ACC team this season, while the Crimson Tide managed just five. Making its 16th appearance in the third round in the last 20 seasons, Stanford will host fifth-seeded BYU on Monday at 4 p.m. ET.

The 44th edition of the Women’s College Cup will be played December 5 and 8 at CPKC Stadium, with the University of Kansas and Kansas City Sports Commission serving as hosts. The first national semifinal will be played and broadcast live on ESPNU at 6 p.m. ET on Friday, December 5, followed by the second semifinal beginning at approximately 8:45 p.m. ET, also live on ESPNU. The national championship match will take place at 7 p.m. ET on Monday, December 8, and will air live on ESPNU.
